the cave
“The Cave” examines the contrast of outer perception and inner experience. An understanding of the true soul of this piece is difficult to understand from a distance; it is necessary to approach the cave and peer through the small aperture, the selective view that gives witness to its value. The overbearing structure supports a candle and a soft, walnut box; through the aperture in the box, the viewer is given a privileged view of the cave inside. The illuminated candle-wax drips through a hole in the top of the cave, creating a unique experience as the wax builds.
